My work examines the symbolic multiplicity of fashion and its connections to identity, gender, social class, ritual and cultural history. With a focus on the female form and its attention to please the male gaze, I explore issues of suppression, restraint, and display.
My work is inspired by my personal experiences and the environment in which I work; I am a cocktail waitress who wears a modern corset to preform my job at Tropicana Casino, Atlantic City. While contemplating on the stereotypical perceptions of my costume, my aim is to confirm the long almost unwavering connections to fashion between feminine physical beauty and discomfort.
In order to explore these concepts artistically,I express my ideas with a sculpture of a lace corset and horse hair. In examining corsetry or bondage,I wrapped the horse hair tightly around the boning of the corset. I apply paint to imitate lace; in this way it appears less constrained. I am trying to release the tension that is so inherent to the traditional process of lace-making.
